The Academy for Democratic Development strongly condemns the persecution of the Gruhonjić family
The Academy for Democratic Development (ADD) strongly condemns the shameful, cowardly, and dangerous act of vandalism involving the destruction of the car belonging to David Gruhonjić, son of journalist and university professor Dinko Gruhonjić.
This brutal attack, which took place in Novi Sad, cannot and must not be viewed as an isolated incident or mere damage to someone’s property. This is a direct and terrifying continuation of a months-long, systemic lynch campaign, target-drawing, and spreading of hatred towards Dinko Gruhonjić. Now, another red line has been crossed – children and family members have become targets.
When violence spills over from the public sphere and media smear campaigns onto the streets, and is directed at the families of journalists and free-thinking citizens, it is a clear signal that we, as a society, are sinking into a darkness where no one is safe. Tolerating such attacks is a direct complicity in destroying the fundamental pillars of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
The Academy for Democratic Development hereby issues an urgent demand to the competent institutions:
-
We demand that the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the competent prosecutor’s office urgently identify, bring to justice, and prosecute the perpetrators of this heinous act.
-
We demand an investigation into the instigators of this attack, as it is a direct consequence of the atmosphere of lynching that is freely being created in the public space.
The lack of a swift and harsh reaction from state authorities will send an unequivocal message that violence against the families of those who dare to think and speak freely in Serbia is approved and unpunished.
We offer our full and unconditional solidarity and support to the Gruhonjić family in these difficult times. We call upon all civil society organizations, democratic forces, the media, and citizens to stand in defense of every individual’s safety and to loudly and clearly say “no” to violence and terror.
